Categories of Jackets

There are probably dozens of ways to categorize jackets but, for present purposes we’re going to use just three: the mass appeal, the moderate, and the upper-end categories.

Mass appeal jackets are usually made in basic fabrics such as nylon or poly/cotton. These will use basic styles such as a baseball jacket or coaches jacket style. Many mass appeal jackets will be un-lined, or if lined will be in lightweight nylon or cotton flannel. Size specs will be traditional or slightly oversized. Features will be quite limited – such as single-welt pockets on front, seams with little or no topstitching, self-elastic waist bands or knit waistbands. There are lots of examples to be found on that site, including the pullover nylon-oxford jacket produced by Champion. Description: The jacket features a 100% nylon oxford shell and comes with 65-35 polyester/cotton jersey lining. It’s constructed with two zippered welt pockets, striped herringbone rib neck and cuffs, open-bottom hem w/elasticized nylon drawcord, and of course the "C" logo on the left arm and back of the neck. It makes a great embroidered jacket.

Another is the half-zip nylon-Anorak jacket from LA Loving. It’s constructed with a windproof and water-resistant 100% nylon taffeta shell and designed with half-zip front and button-close collar for extra protection against the elements. It comes with a kangaroo pouch pocket and drawstring hood. The Anorak style is a hip-length sport jacket ideal for inclement weather, as noted. The name? Well, the style was worn by Eskimos – later used in World War II and more recently marketed for everyday wear.

A good-lookin’ jacket that’s been a staple for years is the rip-stop nylon pullover - a terrific value in lightweight outerwear. It’s a water-resistant and windproof double-weave mini ripstop that keeps one comfortable in blustery conditions and is remarkably durable. Fully lined in nylon for ease of movement, and also comes with 2 welted pockets. Ripstop is a lighter-weight fabric that – as with this style – is often constructed of nylon and has a double thread running throughout in a grid [which helps keep small tears from spreading without adding to the fabric’s bulk]. Besides jackets, the ripstop fabric is frequently used for tents and sleeping bags, and of course for sports and fashion-related items. For other jackets click here. Finally, the “mass appeal” category includes jackets like the LA Loving nylon-lined Taslan jackets. As described on the site, it keeps one from “the elements” and is constructed of a lightweight, windproof and water-resistant Taslon fabric shell. The jacket is fully lined with nylon for added warmth. It also features sports vented underarms, zippered closure with button-up storm flap and zippered welt pockets. Note: Taslan refers to how the fibers are woven and the resulting texture – a durable and water-repellent nylon fabric with a slightly shiny surface. As one might guess, it’s used mainly in outerwear garments. This jacket too can be embroidered.

The second category we’ll describe here are jackets designed for “moderate appeal”.

Moderate appeal jackets will offer more popular fabrics or more technical fabrics, such as micro-fiber, brushed twill or canvas. Styles tend to be more basic but with fashion elements added. Features often include zippered fronts with front fly flap or inside fly, adjustable cuffs, more pockets [or zippered pockets], topstitching and double needle topstitching, and possibly a hood. Generally, the more fashion-forward the styling, and the more the features, the jacket will have more of a perceived value. Jackets of moderate appeal are part of the collection displayed, for example on this site – with oodles of jackets at wholesale.

There are oodles of options here. For instance, the cotton canvas full-zip jacket from the Dunbrooke collection is one of these. It’s constructed in a rugged, durable, 12 oz. brushed cotton canvas shell with high-loft quilted lining. It comes with a heavy-duty brass zipper with large pouch pockets and thick, comfortable rib knit trim. It also features an inside right chest security pocket and drawstring on hood. Similar is the Dunbrooke 2892, a jacket with rugged styling that complements its outdoor good looks. It features 10 oz. cotton canvas shell; 5 oz. quilted lining; washable corduroy collar; brass zipper; outside slash pockets and inside right chest pocket. What a fabulous corporate jacket – a top of the line embroidered jacket option!

From the UltraClub collection is a modified lighter-weight jacket called the “windshirt”. This one’s a100% polyester, microfiber windshirt with a truly soft hand, with water-wicking mesh-lined body, nylon-lined sleeves, zippered side-seam pockets, bar-tacked at all stress points, and a pleated back. Also has a coordinating trim V-neck. Another from UltraClub is the lined windshirt style #8942. A beautiful 100% polyester shell with peach-soft hand, cotton- and mesh-lined for warmth, water-wicking back, large inside pocket, double-entry hand-warmer pockets, and cape design for ease of embroidering. [Don’t tell anyone but these two could just as well pass for the “upper end category”!] See more details on this classy windshirt here.

From Tri Mountain comes “The Highland” jacket – which features a shell constructed of windproof/water resistant polyurethane-coated medium-weight 100% Taffeta nylon. [Yes, that’s a mouthful!] It also features a contrasting collar trim, half lined with mesh, an elastic cuff and waistband, with back yoke opening for added ventilation. Is also designed with Raglan sleeves, and a hood that’s easily concealed in collar.

Another in the Tri Mountain line is the “Atlantic” – of the windshirt variety. The Atlantic windshirt is constructed of extra-soft windproof all-seasons polyester microfiber and is fully lined with lightweight nylon. It also features 2 side-seam pockets, ribbed crossover collar, cuffs and waistband. Serves as a fantastic embroidered jacket.

Finally, “The Tradesman”, another in the Dunbrooke collection, is a heavy-duty but good-looking 12 oz. all-cotton canvas shell, enzyme-sand washed and brushed vigorously. It’s constructed with a corduroy collar, has a midweight 3" diamond quilt lining, YKK brass zippers on front and chest pockets w/triple needle stitching at all stress points. Is designed with an inside lower left pencil-pocket, pouch for measuring tape etc., and a second inside pocket for other stuff! There are three more outside pockets besides, including a right-chest zippered one. Last but not least, it comes equipped with the Dunbrooke EZPort zipper system for quick embroidery access.

As promised here’s the third category – and below you’ll find a variety of jackets that we’re classifying as those designed as “the upper end” jackets. The elite jackets? You’ve got it! All these jackets on this site.

The Upper-end appeal jackets will feature “high-tech” fabrics with new finishes and treatments, or more expensive upper-end fabrics. This may include waterproof-breathable fabrics, microfiber fabrics and branded insulation. The size specs will be more generous or fashion-forward. These garments will offer many of the same details as the “moderate” category, but will also offer more details [e.g., more pockets, more topstitching, more storm flaps], and more technical, functional details [for example, gussets for ease of movement, snowbelts to reduce wind draft, eyelets to release moisture]. Because the quality of materials is more expensive and there are more features on these garments, the price will tend to be at the higher-end as well.

The fleece-lined full-zip corporate jacket from Dunbrooke that fits this category well is “The Dune”. This jacket is one of the warmest and long lasting fleece garments on the market today. This is a beautiful midweight garment, is slightly ribbed, and has a woven shell fabric -- a specially fabricated nylon taslan faille cloth -- made to last longer and resist the elements. Has a brushed, anti-pilling polyester fleece lining, distinctive front and back contrasting panels, adjustable cuff tabs and drawcord at bottom hem. Also comes with a handy double- entry cargo pocket, inside welted security pocket, zippered nest pocket on outside back, and additional outside zippered hand pockets along with one convenient chest pocket. A great corporate embroidered jacket.

The LAL 977 3-in-1 seems endlessly versatile. It’s 3-in-1 styling lets one wear it as the weather dictates. This jacket has a Taslon nylon outer jacket and removable Taslon/nylon liner jacket with anti-pill fleece lining. It may be worn with liner, jacket alone or liner alone. Jacket details on this page.

The Dunbrooke style 2890 is a heavyweight hooded jacket in 10 oz. cotton canvas. It’s constructed with a high-loft quilted nylon lining and comes with inside right chest pocket.

The “Champion” nylon-tactel jacket from the prestigious Charles River collection is definitely on the higher-end list. Has a100% nylon Tactel shell w/water-resistant finish, and a white mesh lining in the body, dyed-to-match mesh in the sleeves and back gussets. Features full-zip front design, stand-up collar, rib knit trim at the cuffs, covered side pockets, ESP system that conceals embroidery backing for a cleaner look, and much more!

The Taslan storm jacket with “chill-fleece” lining from Augusta has an outer shell of heavyweight Taslan nylon, body and inside collar lined in polyester Chill Fleece, and raglan sleeves lined in quilted nylon taffeta making it easy to pull on/off. Front zipper zips to top of collar, and the two front pockets have zippers with fabric pulls. Designed with heavyweight rib-knit cuffs and bottom band, inside chest pocket with hook and loop fastener, inside storm flap, and glove loops at cuffs. As expected it’s water-resistant and machine-washable. Another great embroidered jacket.
